Summer with New eBooks and Public Library!

Use the hot pink Summer Learning brochure that was given to each Westgate student to get ideas for learning over the summer, including user names and passwords for many online resources. Look in brochure for details about:
  • Westgate School Library will be open five Wednesdays this summer (July 18 and 25, Aug 1, 8, and 15) from 9 - 11:30 am for Westgate students to check out, use computers, and do activities.
  • Over 350 new ebooks and audiobooks are available through Destiny Discover in library catalog.  Use link to right for Destiny Discover then log in with district user name and password.  Search for ebooks (check icon in record to make sure it is an ebook and not a print book or search only for "Digital").  Check out to read or listen.  You must be logged in to see Hold or Check out options. Download app in book if you want it.
  • Check out public library summer programs and resources Read 10 hours and get a free book to take home Sno-Isle Kids' Summer Reading Program.  Summer events at different libraries Sno-Isle Summer Events.
  • Read 201 Reading Award nominees (2019 Best Books and OTTER Award)
The sock monkey check out new ebooks.

Students Compete in 2018 Battle of the Books!

Westgate Battle of the Books students are busy reading.
Nine students in grades 4-6 represented Westgate in the district Battle of the Books on June 1.  Forty teams were there answering questions about 17 books on the list of Best Books (2018 Sasquatch Award and Young Reader's Choice Award nominees.)
The Battle of the Books Club was led by two sixth grade students who helped organize Westgate's teams and quiz them in preparation for the Battle of the Books.
Start reading the 2019 Best Book nominees now if you want to try to join a team next spring.

All Library Resources Due Monday, June 4

Lulu and Frankie are returning  their library books by June 4.
It is time to look for and return all Westgate library resources by Monday, June 4.  The only exceptions are if you are still reading a book or using it for a project - just return it as soon as you are done.  All fines for lost or damaged books also need to be paid.  Check you library account online (login to the library catalog and click My Info tab) or ask in the library if you aren't sure what you have out.
  Students who are missing library resources or haven't paid fines will not be able to participate in field day.
June 1 - Last check out day
June 4 - All library resources due
June 7 - Overdue/fine notices send to classrooms
June 12 - Overdue/fine notices mailed home

Thank You Westgate Volunteers!

Bandicoot celebrates with Westgate volunteers.
Many adults from families and the community volunteer at Westgate and they were celebrated at an event in the library on Friday, May 18th.  These volunteers help all sorts of jobs around the school including in the office, classrooms, and family events.  This school year in the library ten volunteers have been helping with shelving, check out, clerical tasks, and helping students find books.

The Honest Truth Wins Sasquatch Award

The Honest Truth by Dan Gemeinhart
The Honest Truth by Dan Gemeinhart won the 2018 Sasquatch Award.  Students from all over Washington State voted for their favorite out of twelve nominees and The Honest Truth won.  The book is about a boy and his dog who are traveling across Washington State trying to reach Mount Rainier to accomplish a dream.  Author Dan Gemainhart is a local author and he visited Westgate for Young Author's Day this year.
